A Happy Harmonies cartoon with Bosko: Bosko and his dog Bruno are guarding some sheep. Bosko is sleeping and not watching his flock carefully. The youngest and most mischievous in the herd is a black sheep who runs into the woods and plays a trick on the others, pretending that he has been kidnapped. Unfortunately, the little black sheep cries wolf and causes Bosko all kinds of trouble. When the trick is discovered, he is taught a lesson by the shepherd's dog, who dresses as a black bear. Bosko awakens and gives chase with his shotgun, thinking that it's a real bear. Once discovered and out of shells, they all have a good laugh until another bear comes by and takes after them with the attendant chase scenes. The bear is unmasked as being the five little lambs wearing a bear suit.

Urban Science: To Demonstrate How Spiders Fly

Urban Science: To Demonstrate How Spiders Fly 1909

This charming short film is surprisingly technically advanced for its time, using a mechanical spider to demonstrate how the creatures spin the threads to create their webs. Suddenly the spider lifts up all of its legs, allowing itself to be dragged through the air, an effect that is both amusing and disarming, before gracefully descending through a series of mid-air acrobatics. Percy Smith believed he could cure people of their arachnophobia with his short films showing enlarged replicas of spiders, and certainly most viewers would be more delighted than scared by the mechanical star of this short. The final image of a real spider scrabbling around its web might be less endearing, however.

Dusty Stacks of Mom: The Poster Project

Dusty Stacks of Mom: The Poster Project 2013

Interweaving the forms of personal filmmaking, abstract animation, and the rock opera, this animated musical documentary examines the rise and fall of a nearly-defunct poster and postcard wholesale business; the changing role of physical objects and virtual data in commerce; and the division (or lack of) between abstraction in fine art and psychedelic kitsch. Using alternate lyrics as voice over narration, the piece adopts the form of a popular rock album reinterpreted as a cine-performance.

Le circuit de l'alcool

This one is another warning to the French public about the dangers of alcohol. Everything seems rosy at first, but that doesn't last long. After illustrating the 'metamorphosis of money' into alcohol, the film describes the inevitable consequence - which isn't just drunkenness and unconsciousness, but insanity and death apparently.

Petites causes grands effets

Petites causes grands effets 1912

French animation from O'Galop is a pretty interesting little film. The movie shows a father going into the bar for a drink and then we see what this can do to his children. We see his children before he starts drinking and then we see the monsters they will grow up to be due to alcohol.
